DMM — In a Class by Itself
If an evangelism strategy was so effective that it has converted millions in the last 25 years, yet so simple that children can use it, would you consider it too good to be true, or too wonderful to ignore? It’s called Disciple Making Movements (DMM) and is depicted in this 8-minute video.
DMM is in a class by itself, because it uses a Bible reading strategy based on discovery and experience rather than knowledge and lecture. It called Discovery Bible Study (DBS).
- In small groups unbelievers read a short scripture passage and ask: What does this tell us about God? What does it tell us about people?
- Every week each participant asks: If this scripture passage is true, what is God telling me to do differently this week? Then each person does that one thing and reports what happened at the next group meeting.
- Also, every week each participant asks: This coming week, with whom will I share this scripture passage? Then they talk to that person and report what happened at the next group meeting.
After you view the video, ask yourself: Could this be a more effective evangelism method than I have been using? How can I learn more?
DMM works because it imitates the method Jesus used in the Gospels to make disciples who make disciples. We see His method in action in Acts and the Epistles. It effectively spread the Good News for three centuries. After that, Christians started designing supposedly better ways to reach the lost, even though human methods are not better than God’s. Our human ideas have hardened into the dried-clay of traditions that we now take for granted. The result is that Western Christians have a hard time grasping what Jesus taught and demonstrated about disciple making.
I’ve always favored using a variety of witnessing methods. When I learn about a good approach, I teach it to others, and I write articles encouraging others to try it. In spite of my preference for variety, these days I am feeling compelled to emphasize Disciple Making Movements and Discovery Bible Study. So, I am writing a series of blog posts to present their unique features.
